Hythe & Saltwood Sailing Club
Hythe & Saltwood Sailing Club has been providing great facilities for sailing and windsurfing in an informal, friendly environment on Hythe beach since 1971. Being a family club, we welcome visitors and new members alike and with a wide range of water sports and social events on offer, there is something for everyone. Members of the Club come from all aspects of the local community, from retired couples to young families with children.
This position of our RYA affiliated club allows us to take advantage of the excellent sailing area provided by Hythe Bay, with the convenience of the town nearby. The sailing and windsurfing off Hythe beach is excellent, ranging from those warm, flat days, ideal for beginners, to demanding force 8 gales; enough to test the most proficient windsurfer. Usually, however, conditions are a more sedate force 2 to 4 in the prevailing south-westerly winds.
Our well-appointed clubhouse, whose sun deck overlooks the beach, has a licensed bar, a galley providing hot food and refreshments, changing rooms with hot showers, a large dinghy park and a secure sailboard storage garage. All club facilities are run by Club members on a voluntary basis, thus ensuring a friendly and safe atmosphere for the whole family.
The Club’s active dinghy sailing section meets on Sunday mornings and Thursday evenings. The sailing section caters for all types of sailing from competitive racing to trips along the coast for a pint and a pasty.
All levels of experience are welcomed, and we run regular RYA training courses if you are new to sailing.
Windsurfing at HSSC falls into two main categories: longboard racing, which is held on a Tuesday evening, and shortboarding, which happens basically whenever it’s windy enough! We offer a wide range of advantages to the keen windsurfer, including secure board storage, competitive racing with a great social scene, a wealth of experience to draw upon, and the added safety of sailing with others.
SUPing classes are also available at the HSSC and if you are new to the water then it is a great sport to build your confidence and balance. There is no better feeling than a gentle paddle along the beautiful Hythe coastline to relax you after a busy day.
HSSC is a very warm and friendly family orientated club that welcomes everyone. The Club has a strong social programme, with numerous parties, BBQ’s, quiz nights to test your knowledge (whilst enjoying a fish and chip supper!) and fun events for everyone’s enjoyment throughout the year. From Burns Night celebrations in January to the ever-popular Summer Party in August or the more formal Laying Up supper in November to the summer Ship Race and numerous other social events.
To give any of our water sports a go, why not come down to our RYA Push the Boat out day on May 18th – 19th. During the day we will be offering free taster sessions on our boats and boards so it’s a great chance to have a go at a new sport. If you like it then why not join our club and become a regular.
