Shepway Rotary Clubs organise Hog Roast and fun afternoon for young carers

50 Shepway Young Carers and their families thoroughly enjoyed the annual Hog Roast and Games Day organised for them by the Rotary clubs of Romney Marsh, Folkestone, Folkestone Channel and Hythe at Warren Golf Course, Littlestone.  The weather was ideal and there were 20 Rotarians on hand to oversee the activities including putting, tennis, croquet and hobby horse racing.  The Young Carers entered into all the activities with great gusto with two of boys winning prizes for ‘holes in one’ in the putting and one of the girls winning the prize for the lowest score.  Everyone thought the annual event, the second to be held courtesy of the Romney Marsh Rotary Club, had been a huge success.

Many of the young carers headed straight for the putting green, as word circulated that there were prizes for the lowest score and holes in one.  The hobby horse racing game was also very popular, with each participant mounted on a numbered wooden horse and progressed along the track according to the roll of some dice with the winner taking their pick from a large box of sweets. Once the young carers had worked up an appetite and the adults were in need of a rest, everyone enjoyed the delicious hog roast as they chatted in the sunshine.

The feedback from the young carers, their families and the management of Imago (the organisation responsible for Young Carers in Kent) was excellent and the Rotarians are already planning their next activities for the youngsters.

Joe Taylor, Children & Young People’s Locality Manager from Imago summed it all up beautifully:

“This was a fantastic day for the young carers and their family members.  As last year, it was a unique opportunity for families which have members with an illness and/or disability to come together in a supportive environment.  I know how much it means to all the families to see Rotary members providing such a wonderful day out and showing such interest in their circumstances.  I have since received lovely messages of thanks from the young carers including “The whole day was wonderful.  Thank you so much for such a lovely afternoon.”
